Chatri Sityodtong revolutionizing MMA in Asia with expansion of ONE Championship

Why is Chatri Sityodtong name synonymous to ONE Championship and mixed martial arts in ASIA? Get to know more about Chatri and how his influence help build ONE Championship

Every once in a while, someone comes along with an idea -- something so profound that it changes his life and the lives of those around him. Multi-millionaire Thai entrepreneur Chatri Sityodtong spent his entire existence abiding by the principles of martial arts which he holds dear, bringing him success and prosperity from his extremely humble beginnings.

Chatri Sityodton

The teachings and principles of martial arts, to which he says he owes his life to, has led Sityodtong to pioneer a revolutionary transformation in Asia, uniting its people under one banner -- mixed martial arts, or more commonly known as MMA -- today the fastest growing sport in the world.

Just in the last couple of years alone, MMA’s viewership has exploded across Asia and is shown in over 118 countries all over the world.

Though the allure and excitement of martial arts in a safe and competitive environment has drawn fans from all corners of the globe, the sport’s popularity in Asia can be attributed to Sityodtong and his tremendous work in building MMA promotion ONE Championship from a promising, young upstart to the largest sports media property in Asia in a span of just five years.

Today, ONE Championship is the premier MMA organization in Asia.

Athletes from all over the world, and not just locally, are jumping at the opportunity to showcase their skills inside the ONE Championshipcage. The biggest marketing partners in the world are eager to do business with the promotion, riding the wave of MMA as it continues to increase in popularity.

ONE Championship is also set to cross the US$1 billion dollar valuation mark in about 12-18 months according to Sityodtong, which is unprecedented considering the company is still barely in its infancy.

We are growing at triple digit growth rates and the market opportunity is massive in Asia. There are 4.1 billion people who live here and our growth opportunities are limitless,” said Sityodtong.

Asia is home to the world’s largest population, and with ONE Championship’s constant expansion into new and untapped markets, it makes sense that crossing the billion dollar valuation mark is an inevitable milestone for the company.

Chatri Sityodtong of ONE Champioship

Just last month, Sityodtong led an emotional return to his native Thailand, holding the first ever live MMA event from a major MMA organization with ONE: Kingdom of Champions. It also crowned the youngest MMA champion in the history of the sport, a female champion at that -- 19-year old Angela Lee who is of Singaporean, American and Korean descent.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. ONE Championship has consistently pushed the envelope of the last few years, breaking barriers and shattering social and economic stereotypes as it touches the lives of its athletes and the fans who rally behind them.

Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam and a few other new countries are on the map in the coming years. Equally important is that we will be expanding our footprint in China this year and beyond,” said Sityodtong.

In 2011, ONE Championship was dreamt up with the aim of unifying all of Asia’s martial arts talent under one global MMA powerhouse. Sityodtong believed in the potential of MMA in the region, which is said to have been the birthplace of martial arts with over 5,000 years of rich history.

It began with a small fanbase of hardcore MMA fans intrigued at the possibilities of what would later become a global phenomenon. Today ONE Championship is broadcast to a potential 1 billion homes worldwide.

In a brief period, ONE has also been able to attract various blue-chip sponsors, to partner with the largest TV networks in each Asian nation, and to sign the top MMA talents and world champions in Asia to exclusive contracts.

My passion and love for martial arts gave me the drive to bring ONE Championship to fans in Asia who yearned for exciting live MMA events in their own backyard,” said Sityodtong. “I have trained in Muay Thai and various other martial arts my entire life, and I felt compelled to showcase the sport’s beauty not just to Asia, but to the entire world.”

ONE Championship has rapidly expanded across the region over the last few years, holding live events in countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Dubai, and even mainland China. The promotion’s MMA talent comes from all over the world, with fighters signed from Europe, the United States, Brazil, Japan, and central Asian nations like Tajikistan.

It’s just something that I felt I needed to do – to give back to the sport that has given me so much in life,” said Sityodtong about the birth of ONE Championship. “Every life lesson that I have learned has come from martial arts, and the principles and ideals that martial arts swears by, I have taken to heart. It has guided me all throughout, and I credit my success to the lessons it instilled in me at a young age.”

Sityodtongwasn’t always affluent. He experienced poverty to some degree at ground zero, putting himself through Harvard Business School with sheer willpower and perseverance, while digging his own family out of the trenches so to speak.

With ONE Championship, it was an idea that just made sense to Sityodtong. And he believed in it enough to see the dream through.

We have been registering triple digit percentage annual growth rates in revenues since we started five years ago. Compared to most companies around the world in any industry, ONE Championship is doing very well. However we are still far from where I would like us to be,”said Sityodtong.

Our plan over the next 3-5 years is to get to a 52 event weekly schedule of live events across Asia with a live broadcast to 2 billion homes. Our vision is to become a part of everyday life for everyone in Asia. I envision a world where everyone in Asia will tune into our events every weekend. There is no reason why it should not happen because Asia has always been the home of martial arts.”

Wherever the company is headed, Sityodtong is certainly the man to know and things are looking to be in good shape. Asian MMA, at the very least, has a man they can trust to take this amazing sport to unprecedented heights.

Ev Ting Defeats Eric Kelly At One: Clash Of Heroes

ONE: CLASH OF HEROES was successfully held at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Read on to know the highlights and winners at ONE: CLASH OF HEROES

Ev Ting Defeats Eric Kelly At One: Clash Of Heroes

29 January 2015 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), electrified the iconic Stadium Negara with another evening of world-class mixed martial arts action. Fight fans in Malaysia were on the edge of their seats as the best in local and international mixed martial arts talent battled it out inside the ONE Cage. In the Malaysia Warrior Bout main event, Malaysia’s own Ev “E.T.” Ting defeated the Philippines’ Eric “The Natural” Kelly by submission and took the time to call out reigning champion Marat Gafurov in the post-fight interview.

In the Malaysia Warrior Bout main event, an exhausted Ev Ting pulled out a gutsy victory over Eric “The Natural” Kelly of the Philippines, winning by submission in round three. Ting dominated the striking exchanges throughout the bout, blasting Kelly with various combinations. Kelly spent most of his time defending against Ting’s aggression, biding his time and pacing himself for a distance finish. In the third, Ting latched on a standing Guillotine that transitioned into a mounted Guillotine, leaving Kelly no choice but to tap out.

“Marat Gafurov I’m coming for you, where is that belt at?” said Ting, looking for a shot at the ONE Featherweight World Championship.

“With the new weight cut policy I wanna fight as much as I can and fight full time to feed my family. I want to fight Marat Gafurov. The fight was harder than I expected. I didn't know he could take so much hits. I respect Kelly as a fighter and it was a great fight,” Ting added.

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of Baguio City, Philippines showcased Team Lakay’s famous Wushu base by dominating opponent Tetsuya Yamada of Japan over three rounds. Folayang completely shut down Yamada, keeping the Japanese fighter at the long end of his straight right hand and occasional spinning back kick. Folayang also landed various flush shots and stuffed numerous takedowns to earn the unanimous decision victory.

Former American freestyle wrestler Jake Butler returned to action against mixed martial arts veteran Tatsuya Mizuno to win by first round stoppage. Butler controlled the Japanese fighter with his world-class wrestling from the opening bell, pulling Mizuno down to the canvas on a successful takedown. From there, Butler unleashed a series of elbows from top position, finishing Mizuno with only a few seconds remaining in the first round.

Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio scored an electrifying first round knockout over Malaysia’s Saiful “The Vampire” Merican. After a brief moment where both fighters took the time to size each other up, Merican lunged in looking to put together a combination but Eustaquio took a step back and unleashed a counter left hook as Merican was coming in. With Merican face down on the mat, the referee stopped the bout after a technical ground kick landed for good measure.

Samir Mrabet of Brussels, Belgium remained unbeaten in a second-round submission victory over Sami Amin of Cairo, Egypt. Mrabet controlled the action on the ground, grinding away against Amin who tried his best to defend. The end came when Mrabet secured mount and worked on the Head and Arm Choke to seal the deal.

“I’m blown away by the support I get from this new family that I’ve made in Malaysia. It really humbles me,” said Mrabet.

Keanu Subba and Rayner Kinsiong brought some local flavor into the mix with an all-Malaysian lightweight bout. After a brief exchange of strikes, Subba dumped Kinsiong to the mat via an outside leg trip. From top position, Subba landed a plethora of downward punches as the referee intervened to stop the bout.

“I saw my opportunity and took him down, and capitalized on that. That was the plan, to take him down and land some big shots,” said Subba.

Former Pankration world champion, Christian “The Warrior” Lee made quick work of Egypt’s Mahmoud Mohamed, continuing his fast rise through the featherweight ranks with a crafty submission victory. Lee swarmed Mohamed with lightning quick punches from the opening bell. An emphatic slam put Mohamed on his back and from there, Lee put the finishing touches on a Single-Arm Chicken Wing, forcing Mohamed to tap out.

Colossal ONE athletes Agilan “Alligator” Thani of Malaysia and James Kouame of Canada induced a stream of cheers from the Kuala Lumpur crowd with their intense middleweight matchup. Thani impressed with various successful takedowns throughout the bout. In round two, after a slam led to full mount, Thani worked on ground-and-pound before seizing the opportunity for a fight-ending Rear Naked Choke.

Saygid 'Dagi' Guseyn Arslanaliev impressed fans in his ONE Championship debut with an all-out, aggressive style, taking care of business against Jakarta, Indonesia's Mishal Alfad in just under a minute. 'Dagi' put on a showcase of powerful strikes and emphatic slams and after a Suplex put Alfad on his back, 'Dagi' went straight for the ground-and-pound to force the referee stoppage.

Female ONE athletes Jenny Huang of Chinese Taipei and Amira Badr of Egypt kicked off the action at ONE: CLASH OF HEROES. Huang dominated both the first and second rounds with her boxing until she finished the bout by Triangle Choke submission in round two.

ONE Championship Looks to Close 2015 on a High Note

One Champioship aims to close 2015 with a bang, as it feature the best Filipino MMA fighters in the upcoming ONE: Spirit of Champions at the Mall of Asia Arena this Friday.

Asia's premier mixed martial arts organization is back at the state-of-the-art, 20,000-seater Mall of Asia Arena this Friday, December 11, in an event called ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS.

The fight card highlights the return of former women's boxing world champion Ana "Hurricane" Julaton as well as a bout featuring bantamweight stalwart, Mark "Mugen" Striegl. In the main event, Paul "Typhoon" Cheng steps in as a last minute replacement for original participant Chi Lewis-Parry, as he takes on Filipino-American Brandon "The Truth" Vera for the ONE Heavyweight World Championship.

Fans have come to expect ONE to hold spectacular year-end cards in Manila, after the promotion has held successful shows here in the past. ONE is known to pit the best local Filipino talent against worthy international opposition, and this card is no different.

At flyweight, Team Lakay's cool and collected Wushu specialist, Geje "Gravity" Eusraquio will make an appearance along with hair-flipping striking machine Eugene Toquero. Both fighters will take on Chinese opponents in what is expected to thrilling matchups in the sport's lighter weight divisions.

Eustaquio will face Chinese fighter Yang Jian Bing in a surefire fast-paced flyweight bout. After two losses, one against Anatpong Bunrad and the other against Adriano Moraes, Eustaquio is eager to come back better and stronger, and showcase just how much he has improved since. Eustaquio, known for his well-rounded striking game, will need to outwork his opponent to emerge victorious in his home turf and return to his winning ways.

Toquero is one of the most exciting fighters to come out of Manila. His time inside the ONE Cage has been memorable, as he’s delighted fans with impeccable striking and flashy combinations. The former celebrity MMA trainer recently fell short of victory at ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA when he lost to Riku Shibuya via unanimous decision but he is set to do battle with China’s Wu Ze, who represents a chance for Toquero to get back into serious title contention.

ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS is poised to be an amazing card and is the perfect cap-off to what, by all accounts, has been an amazing year for ONE. As the sport of MMA in Asia grows in popularity by the day, ONE chief Victor Cui promises a continuous commitment to cultivating local, homegrown heroes from the grassroots into bonafide superstars.

"2015 has been an amazing year and we've seen so many different things, climbed new heights while breaking barriers and spreading the ideals of the MMA discipline," said Cui.

"We've seen local MMA heroes emerge like unbeaten women's strawweight Angela Lee, and the man in the main event this Friday night, Brandon "The Truth" Vera. When we see fans cheering on their favorite fighters in a jam-packed arena like MOA, that's when we know we've done a good job."

With a team of dedicated experts in their chosen fields at the helm of ONE Championship, the promotion has seen phenomenal success.

Next year, ONE is expected to hold even more shows in iconic cities around Asia, nearly twice as many as this year’s output. Led by the promotion’s charismatic champions, and a passionate fanbase growing in numbers by the minute, ONE is in good hands at the turn of 2016.

“As good as this year was, I think next year will be even better,” said Cui.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated, “Each year in Manila, we try to outdo ourselves by putting on increasingly exciting fight cards for passionate fight fans in the Philippines. The owner of eight KO victories, Brandon Vera is one of the most recognizable figures in the game, as well as one of the most feared Muay Thai practitioners in the world. Renowned for possessing outstanding striking technique, Vera devastated Ukrainian heavyweight Igor Subora with a straight left and a flurry of kicks in his ONE Championship debut to the delight of the fans in Manila. Now, Vera looks to utilize his outstanding ability and vast experience fighting some of the very best fighters in the world to his advantage as he accepts the challenge of prospect Chi Lewis Parry.

At six feet and nine inches tall, colossal British stand out Chi Lewis Parry has one of the most imposing frames in MMA today, with an outstanding professional record to match. With five first round finishes to his credit, Parry remains undefeated in MMA competition and has immediately turned his attention to Brandon “The Truth” Vera in his quest for the heavyweight title. At ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS, Parry will get his wish as Vera steps into the cage to meet him head on.

Female boxing world champion, Ana “Hurricane” Julaton, was last seen in the cage scoring a unanimous decision victory over Egypt’s Walaa Abbas last December. She has steadily been improving her ground game since then under the watchful guidance of a new grappling coach and cannot wait to show fight fans just how much she has learned in training. Julaton finally gets her chance to showcase her wares in front of her passionate Filipino fan base against Russian kickboxer Irina Mazepa.

Irina Mazepa of St. Petersburg, Russia is a former kickboxing world champion who is just fresh off defeating the highly-regarded Ann “Athena” Osman in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month at ONE: TIGERS OF ASIA. Mazepa stopped Osman via TKO in the very first round of her ONE Championship debut, shocking Osman’s hometown crowd. Mazepa is in for another tough test however, as she takes on Ana Julaton of the Philippines.

Mark “Mugen” Striegl is one of the Philippines’ most talented young bantamweights. He owns a 14-1 professional record which includes 12 submission victories. The well-rounded grappler is a complete fighter however, boasting world-class striking skills honed throughout his time training in the top gyms in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. Striegl is set to take on the undefeated Jordan “Showtime” Lucas of Melbourne, Australia.

21-year old Jordan “Showtime” Lucas is undefeated at eight wins and no losses. He is one of Australia’s top bantamweights and has railed off two straight submission finishes in his last two outings. The talented Lucas will now face a stern challenge from one of the best fighters in his division, Mark Striegl, in his ONE Championship debut.

Ruel Catalan of the Philippines is looking to get back on track after two recent setbacks. The promising 27-year old flyweight is long and quick with his striking and boasts a capable ground game. Training out of his older brother’s Catalan Fighting System gym, Ruel is set for another battle inside the ONE Cage, this time against Brazilian grappler, Alex Silva.

Alex Silva last competed in ONE Championship two years ago, scoring a hard-earned victory over Rene Catalan. He is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist with a terrifying ground game and knack for securing highlight reel submission finishes. Silva makes his return to the ONE Cage now, two years later against his previous opponent’s younger brother, Ruel Catalan, in a flyweight matchup that is sure to get fans up on their feet.
