Faceboook says that there in a increase in data demanded by the government

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg
Facebook Inc recorded a slight increase in government requests for account data in the second half of 2014, according to its Global Government Requests Report, which includes information about content removal.

Requests for account data increased to 35,051 in the second half of 2014 from 34,946 in the first half, with requests from countries such as India rising and those from others including United States and Germany falling, the report by the world's largest Internet social network showed.

Facebook said it restricted 9,707 pieces of content for violating local laws, 11 percent more than in the first half, with access restricted to 5,832 pieces in India and 3,624 in Turkey.(govtrequests.facebook.com)

"We will continue to scrutinize each government request and push back when we find deficiencies. We will also continue to push governments around the world to reform their surveillance practices in a way that maintains the safety and security of their people while ensuring their rights and freedoms are protected," Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy management wrote in a blog post. (bit.ly/18vocm1)

Bickert said Facebook challenges requests that appear to be "unreasonable" or "overbroad" and if a country requests content be removed because it is illegal, Facebook may restrict access only in that country.

The technology industry has pushed for greater transparency on government data requests, seeking to shake off concerns about their involvement in vast, surreptitious surveillance programs revealed by former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo and Google last year began publishing details about the number of government requests for data they receive.

Facebook on Sunday also updated its community standards to tell users what types of posts are not allowed on the service, providing guidance on policies related to self-injury, dangerous organizations, bullying and harassment, criminal activity, sexual violence and exploitation.

Mums post breastfeeding selfies in Facebook protest after social network removes photo for 'nudity violations'

Dozens of mums have taken to Facebook to post their breastfeeding selfies, after one mother’s photo was reported for nudity violations.

Mum-of-two Kaya Wright, 32, posted a picture of her nursing her 16-month-old son Kayden in the bath on a closed breastfeeding group on the social network.

But the 32-year-old said that she received a notification from Facebook saying that they were ‘reviewing’ the image she shared with Liverpool Community BAMBIS.

It comes just days after breastfeeding mothers were outraged after being banned from feeding their children - at a breastfeeding conference.

Kaya, who works as a nurse, told the Liverpool Echo: “At first I thought it was a joke. Facebook said the image had been reported for nudity but you really couldn’t see anything. Then I was a bit disappointed at the thought that someone in the group had reported the image.

“It’s a breastfeeding group, so what do you expect? Some of my friends thought that maybe it had been reported by mistake.”

Do you think breastfeeding pics should be allowed on Facebook?

    YES
    NO

But after Kaya told the group what had happened, dozens of other mums started to post their breastfeeding selfies in solidarity.

Kaya who also has an older son Daniel, five, added: “I tried to breastfeed Daniel but it didn’t work out. But it was completely different with Kayden.

“Breastfeeding is amazing, everyone should try it. But in this country I’ve noticed there is a different attitude to breastfeeding. Ever since Kayden was born, people have kept asking me when are you going to bottle feed. Breastfeeding is hard and it’s made ever harder by other people’s perceptions. I think breastfeeding should be taught in schools to raise more awareness.

“In the Western world breasts are sexualised, you see celebrities with their boobs out so people associate them with sex. But people need to remember that first and foremost breasts are for feeding babies.”

Later, Facebook contacted Kaya to say they would not be removing the picture as it did not violate their rules on nudity.

What to expect from Facebook Q3 earnings Here is a preview

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivers a speech during a workshop for application developers in Jakarta, Indonesia, Monday, Oct. 13, 2014.
It has been a tough earnings season for tech companies so far, with Twitter, Netflix and Amazon all getting hammered after reporting their quarterly results this month. Will Facebook fare any better?

Facebook will report its third quarter results after the market closes on Tuesday. It is expected to post earnings of $0.40 per share on revenue of $3.12 billion, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. By comparison, Facebook reported earnings of $0.25 per share on revenue of just more than $2 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.

The social media company has beat analyst estimates in each quarter this year, but as CNBC points out, Wall Street's expectations may be a bit high considering Facebook's own warning that the growth rate could slow in the second half of this year.

After having struggled in its first months as a public company, Facebook has turned into a Wall Street darling

After having struggled in its first months as a public company, Facebook has turned into a Wall Street darling thanks to in large part to its ability to monetize on mobile. Mobile ads accounted for 62% of the company's total ad revenue in the second quarter, up from effectively nothing in the lead-up to its IPO in 2012. Arvind Bhatia, an analyst with Sterne Agee, predicts that mobile ads will account for 66% of ad revenue in the September quarter and may hit 80% in the next two years.

"There is seemingly little that can get in the way of Facebook given its hegemonic status in the world of online advertising, matched only by Google," Brian Wieser, an analyst with Pivotal Research Group, wrote in an investor note last week.

Investors and analysts are generally optimistic about Facebook's ability to monetize through video ads, Instagram ads and the recently launched "Buy" button on its website, though the company's execs will likely stress that these efforts are still very early on.

Some of Facebook's recent acquisitions may be in the spotlight during the earnings call that follows the release on Tuesday. Facebook finally closed the WhatsApp deal earlier this month, after having announced it back in February. It also launched a new ad platform in September based on Atlas, a company it acquired from Microsoft last year.

Facebook stock topped $80 a share for the first time last week and was trading near its all-time high Tuesday morning ahead of its earnings announcement. The company now has a market cap of just under $210 billion.

Facebook Will Pay Up If You Find Bugs in the Oculus Rift

For years, Facebook has maintained a bug bounty program to reward those who find problems with its platform. Now, it's expanding that program to Oculus Rift, which it acquired as part of Oculus VR for $2 billion in March.

The company is offering money for identifying issues in any major part of Oculus Rift’s code, from the development software to the website — with a minimum payout of $500 for bugs and software vulnerabilities. There's no upper limit, so the more critical or inventive the find, the more it could be worth.

Facebook isn’t reserved in its crowdsourced approach. The program, which covers a wide range of Facebook’s software properties, has paid out more than $2 million since its inception in 2011.

Facebook security engineer Neal Poole told The Verge that it’s focusing first on developer communication tools in the software, but Facebook won’t rule out bug rewards for the headset itself.

"A lot of the issues that come up with Oculus are not necessarily in the hardware yet," he said. "Potentially in the future, if people were to go explore and find issues in the SDK or the hardware, that is definitely of interest to us."

That hardware, meanwhile, is currently in its second generation of development, but Facebook has remained mum about when we can expect the Rift to hit the open market.
