McIlroy split was like someone dying, says Wozniacki

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and his former girlfriend, tennis player Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, wait at the fourth tee during the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship golf tournament in Norton
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki says she felt like someone close to her had died after the split from golfer Rory McIlroy last year.
The Dane was quoted by Britain's Independent newspaper as saying her world was turned upside down when the Northern Irishman ended their relationship in May after wedding invitations had been sent out.
"In my head I had everything until that moment," said Wozniacki. "I had a great career, I was getting married, I have a perfect family. There was really nothing going against me. I was happy, very happy.
"Then all of a sudden something happens you don’t expect. You see your world turned around, literally from one second to the next. I didn't know how strong I was until that happened and I didn't know how much you can actually take. It really feels like someone close to you has died.
"That taught me so much. I grew up so much in that short amount of time. I also realized who is always there for me and who is just there when things are good.
"You learn about life. You have to enjoy it while it's there. You have to enjoy all the great moments. I think now when I look back I wouldn't have been without it because now I really know I'm strong, I know what I want, I know what I can accept, what I can't accept."
The biggest break-ups in sports
Their careers initially went in different directions after the split with McIlroy, who is now the world's number one golfer, winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth as Wozniacki suffered an embarrassing first-round exit at the French Open.

"When I walked into the stadium or on to the court everybody was staring at me," said the Dane. "I felt the pity. I was like: ‘I’m OK. I’m fine. Don’t give me your pity. Don’t come up to me and stroke me. I’m not a child. I’m going to be fine'.
"I was trying in the match but I wasn't there. I have to be happy to play. I have to be excited. At the time it was like a funeral for me."
Wozniacki has since returned to form, reaching her first grand slam final since 2009 at the U.S. Open in September and going back up to number five in the world.

Ozil: I can win the Ballon d'Or at Arsenal

Mesut ozil
Having helped Germany to triumph at the World Cup last summer, the Gunners midfielder is "convinced" that he has what it takes to overtake Cristiano Ronaldo as the world's best

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has his eyes on the Ballon d'Or.

The Gunners star, who helped Germany to World Cup glory last summer, is "convinced" that he has what it takes to become the best player in the world.

While Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have divided the award between them over the last seven years, Ozil feels that he is in a good position to win the game's biggest individual prize.

"If I continue to develop well and stay healthy, I would like, in the next few years, to hold the Ballon d'Or in my hands," he told Sport Bild.

"I am convinced that it can happen.

"I'm feeling very positive. I'm a world champion and I play at a top club in the Premier League.

"There is much more of a physical test here than there is in Spain or in the Bundesliga – I constantly have bruises but that makes me harder. I feel physically better than ever."

Ozil had Arsenal permission to visit Berlin, says Low

Mesut Ozil
The World Cup-winning coach says he was aware that the midfielder had visited Germany following claims he could be in trouble over a night out.

Germany head coach Joachim Low says Mesut Ozil had Arsenal's permission to be in Berlin following claims he could face questions from the club over a night out.

Ozil, who missed the Gunners' 2-1 win over Newcastle due to illness, was reportedly seen at a night club in the German capital late on Saturday.

There has been no indication Arsenal could consider disciplinary action against the midfielder and Low has revealed the 26-year-old had been given permission to make the trip to his homeland despite missing the match with the Magpies.

"It's anyone's guess whether he was partying or not," Low told reporters ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Australia.

"He has told me that he was in Berlin. I spoke to him and he said that he was weakened by a cold during last week and so Arsene Wenger and Ozil together took the decision to not play him at the weekend. After the match, he was allowed to fly to Berlin."

Low also defended his decision to call up Lukas Podolski, despite the on-loan Gunners forward having struggled to find form at Inter in 2015.

"I saw his match against Cesena in the stadium and then spoke to Lukas the following day," Low said. "The match was revived when he came on at half time. He is overall in better physical shape, but of course he has had initial difficulties in Italy.

"Lukas has always been there for us in the last 11 years. He gave it his all for the team. He has played loads of games and scored many goals. And he still has a lot of quality -- age has not taken its toll.

"He has our full support behind him. This will help him at his club, wherever he will be playing. It's important for him that he gets to play regularly and plays well."

Low also hailed the return of Bastian Schweinsteiger to the national squad and revealed he has not discounted a potential return for Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez.

"It's important to have the captain back on board. He's in very good form and has taken an important leadership role at Bayern," he said, before adding of Gomez: "We're still looking at him."

Mesut Ozil spotted partying at German nightclub hours after missing Arsenal game through illness

Arsenal defeated Newcastle 2-1 in their Premier League clash on Saturday
Playmaker Mesut Ozil was omitted from the squad through illness
Germany midfielder was reportedly partying with friends at a Berlin nightclub later that evening
Mesut Ozil
Mesut Ozil will be carpeted by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger after being spotted in a Berlin nightclub just hours after missing the club’s game at Newcastle because he had a cold.

The German international, the club’s £42.5million record signing, was left out of the match-day squad because he felt under the weather. And Wenger gave him permission to fly back to his homeland early to prepare for tomorrow’s friendly against Australia.

But instead of nursing his illness he was pictured in a club on Saturday night.

His decision to go out partying leaves question marks over his omission from the squad to face John Carver's side on Saturday.

And manager Wenger will remind the club's record signing of his responsibilities in a face-to-face meeting when he returns from international duty following Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia.

Ozil would probably have travelled to Germany after the clash at St James’ Park anyway, but his actions after being allowed time off will leave Arsenal’s management unimpressed.

Wenger rarely lets players who tarnish the club's reputation get away without, at the very least, a stern talking to.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was fined after being caught smoking in the dressing room following the New Year's Day loss at Southampton.

Likewise, Wenger has warned midfielder Jack Wilshere over his conduct after he was twice photographed with a cigarette.

After a mediocre start to his Arsenal career since joining from Real Madrid in 2013, Ozil is slowly starting to find his form and his recent performances has shown this
Despite being caught out over the weekend, Ozil is still likely to start against Liverpool after the international break.
