Why is transfer of Calum Chambers to Arsenal investigated by FA

The FA are reportedly investigating Calum Chambers' summer transfer from Southampton to Arsenal. As highlighted by Charles Sale of the Daily Mail, the governing body is "refusing to say" what the issue may be.

"The surprising probe for a deal that went through with no problems from either Premier League club follows a complaint made to the FA by, it is believed, a disgruntled third party to the deal," writes Sale.

It is suggested "former team-mates" of Chambers believe the difficulty is Arsenal's fault, but a Gunners spokesman is reported to have said "everything was open, cordial and above board."

Sale indicates both clubs were on "amicable" terms when Chambers' £16 million move was set. Steve Moss, the player's stepfather, works for the Cassius Sports Management agency who looks after Chambers' interest, but Sale believes this doesn't breach any rules.

Chambers has enjoyed a decent start to life at the Emirates, where he was given plenty of responsibility early on by Arsene Wenger. The English defender has mainly filled in at right-back, racking up 24 appearances, per WhoScored.com.

Although the 20-year-old has made just three appearances since the turn of the year, he has proven himself to be a combative, ambitious and versatile player. He is powerful in the air and loves to get forward, scoring once and assisting three for the north London club so far. The youngster does have a habit of getting caught out, though, tallying six yellow cards and one red this season.

For now, Chambers appears to have fallen behind Bellerin in the pecking order at full-back. Bellerin’s speed and dribbling ability makes him a more obvious fit with Arsenal’s attacking style, while that recovery pace also enables him to make up for any errors induced by his inexperience.

Undoubtedly a useful squad member already, Chambers is destined to become a star at the club. He is ready to learn and never shies away from a challenge, as highlighted since his departure from St. Mary's.

Although it seems the FA is set to take a closer look at his deal, Arsenal fans will certainly be pleased with the player's obvious progress already.
