Arsenal won the second leg by 2-0 but it was not enough for the Gunners, they needed another goal to qualify for the Champions League quater finals, but the German believes that Arsenal could have scored more.
Per Mertesacker was left to rue missed chances as Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg of their last-16 clash against Monaco, goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey left the Gunners on the brink of progression.
However, they could not find the third goal that would have taken them through and Mertesacker and his team-mates were left disappointed.
“We had a great chance and could have scored more than two goals, so we’re very disappointed that we didn’t go through,’ the vice-captain said.
“You could see in recent weeks that we have good form, good confidence levels and we showed that here. Even defensively they didn’t create many chances and we had a couple more chances to score.
“Performance-wise I’m very pleased but it wasn’t enough and [Monaco] earned it by playing well in the first leg.”
